How a metallic floor is made

The look comes from a stack of thin, deliberate layers rather than a single coat.

  1. Ground concrete, with cracks and holes filled and ground flush.
  2. Primer to seal and bond.
  3. Opaque base coat, often dark gray or black, chosen to set the depth of color.
  4. Metallic coat. Pearlescent pigment is stirred into clear epoxy and moved across the wet surface with rollers, brushes or a torch-free technique to make the swirls.
  5. Clear top coat. Polyurethane or polyaspartic where UV behavior matters.

No two floors repeat, and a metallic floor cannot be touched up invisibly; the pattern cannot be matched later.

How the swirls of a metallic floor are layered. The depth of a metallic floor comes from pearlescent pigment suspended in a clear layer over a dark opaque base, sealed under a clear top coat.

What the numbers show

  1. Ground concrete Cracks and holes are filled and ground flush first; gloss shows every dip and patch.
  2. Primer Seals the slab and bonds the opaque base.
  3. Opaque base coat Often dark gray or black; its tint sets the depth of the finished color.
  4. Metallic pigment layer Pearlescent pigment stirred into clear epoxy and worked across the wet surface by hand to make the swirls; no two floors repeat.
  5. Clear top coat Protects the swirls and sets the gloss; a UV-stable chemistry is the better match for a garage that stays open to the sun.

A slab that has to be right

A metallic floor is unforgiving. Its glossy surface shows every dip, trowel mark and patched crack, and bubbles or pinholes from air leaving the concrete show up as dots in the swirl. Slabs poured in the 1970s to 1990s — about 59% of Antioch homes were built in that span — often carry hairline cracks and tire wear, which means repairs are sanded or ground flush and sometimes skim-coated before the first coat.

Scratches, slip and sunshine

Gloss shows scratches and swirl marks, so the clear top coat is where durability is bought. A coated floor can be slippery when wet or oily; fine grit mixed into the clear coat adds grip, at some cost to the mirror finish. Because the garage door is open to the Delta sun for hours, ask for a UV-stable top coat instead of standard epoxy, which can amber over a metallic base.

Where metallic floors go wrong

Symptom Likely cause Prevention
Dots or pinholes across the swirl Air or moisture escaping the slab Seal coat, correct temperature window, moisture test
Bubbles under the clear coat Trapped air or a heat-warm slab Roll slowly, avoid coating in rising heat
Flat, patchy swirl Metallic coat worked too long or too thin Pigment load and pot life per data sheet
Visible patches Cracks filled but not ground flush Flush repair before the base coat
Cloudy clear coat Humidity or a damp slab Dew-point check and a moisture test

What metallic epoxy costs in Antioch

Garage Area Metallic epoxy, sound slab
1-car about 240 sq ft $2,160–$3,120
2-car about 420 sq ft $3,780–$5,460
3-car about 704 sq ft $6,336–$9,152

Metallic is the most expensive of the four garage systems because of the pigment, the extra coats and the hand work. Repairs and options add to it. These are market estimates, not quotes.

Metallic Epoxy Garage Floor — common questions

Is a metallic epoxy floor slippery?

A coated floor can be slippery when wet or oily. Fine grit in the clear coat adds grip, and the amount is a choice between grip and the glossy look.

Why is metallic epoxy the priciest garage system?

It needs more layers, pigment that costs more than flake, and slow hand work on a slab prepared to a higher standard. In Antioch that is about $9–$13 per square foot in 2026.

Garage at home, or a warehouse, kitchen, shop, showroom, gym or clinic floor.

    How big is the garage?

Typical: a 2-car garage, about 420 square feet here.

Measure wall to wall; length × width in feet gives the square feet.

    Which coating system?

Typical: flake (chip) epoxy, the system most price guides list first.

What shape is the slab in? pick all that apply

Typical: a sound slab with hairline cracks only.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a moisture primer only follows a moisture test.

    What kind of business floor?

Pick the room that carries the most traffic.

How big is the area to coat?

Length × width in feet, or the square feet. Typical: 2,000 sq ft.

    Which floor system?

Typical for dry storage and bays: solid color epoxy with grit.

What shape is the slab in? pick all that apply

    Typical: a sound slab.

When can the work happen? optional

Typical: after hours or on a weekend. No price change.
